19 January 2020, Hong Kong: A Public Voting Announcement Press Conference was held at D‧Park today publicizing the commencement of the public voting for the “Cathay Pacific 2019 Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards” (Awards).
The Officiating VIPs comprised Dr. Karl C. KWOK, BBS, Vice-President of the Federation; Mr. Edward BELL, General Manager, Brand, Insights & Marketing Communications of Cathay Pacific, Title Sponsor of the Awards; Mr. Henry WONG Yau Kuen, Chief Leisure Manager (Sports Funding) of Leisure and Cultural Services Department and Ms. Vivien LAU, BBS, JP, Vice-President of the Federation cum Chairperson of Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards Organizing Committee.
Nominated athletes and teams were also present to show their support for the event and to encourage and motivate members of the public to cast their votes. A public voting counter was also arranged to facilitate on-site public voting.
The aim of this annual “Hong Kong Sports Stars Oscars” is to recognize the outstanding performance of Hong Kong athletes in 2019 and to create role models for youth in the community. Dr. Karl C. KWOK, Vice-President of the Federation, said: “This year is the Olympic year. There are 187 days before the opening of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Hong Kong athletes have been working hard to secure their places in the Olympic Games. The Federation fully supports their dream of reaching this target. This year is also the 20th Anniversary of the Awards of which each generation of athletes surpassing the last assisted by the advancement of sports science and technology besides inheriting the experience and spirit of its predecessors.”
Mr. Edward BELL, General Manager, Brand, Insights & Marketing Communications of Cathay Pacific, said: “As Hong Kong’s home airline, we are proud to help shine a spotlight on the incredible achievements of our talented homegrown athletes. The Cathay Pacific 2019 Sports Stars Awards celebrate excellence, progressiveness and an unyielding can-do spirit. We invite the public to join us in showing support for our outstanding athletes by casting their votes as we look forward to our home team travelling to compete at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games this summer.”
The Awards comprise six categories, of which four are open for public voting from today until 14 February 2020. These are: “Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards”, “Hong Kong Junior Sports Stars Awards”, “Hong Kong Sports Stars Award for Team Only Sport”, and “Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards for Team Event”. Members of the public can visit the official Awards website at https://sportstar2019.hkolympic.org to cast their votes. Each successful voter will automatically qualify for the lucky draw and have a chance to win prizes sponsored by Cathay Pacific, Panasonic, Fila and Fitness First with a total value of over HK$150,000 (Trade Promotion Competition Licence no.: 53090, 53091). The athlete who receives the highest number of votes among the eight winners of the “Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards” will be awarded the “Cathay Pacific Best of the Best Hong Kong Sports Stars Award”. The results of the Awards would be announced at the Awards Presentation Ceremony cum Annual Dinner of the Federation on Tuesday, 24 March 2020 at the Grand Hall of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
