19 November 2019, Hong Kong: A Press Conference was held at Olympic House today to announce details of the various award categories for the Cathay Pacific 2019 Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards, including the introduction of a new category “Hong Kong Sports Stars Breakthrough of the Year Awards ”.

Mr. Timothy FOK, GBS, JP, President of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (the Federation); Mr. Edward BELL, General Manager, Brand, Insights & Marketing Communications of Cathay Pacific, Title Sponsor of the Awards; Mr. Henry WONG Yau Kuen, Chief Leisure Manager (Sports Funding) of Leisure and Cultural Services Department; and Ms. Vivien LAU, BBS, JP, Vice President of the Federation cum Chairperson of the Awards Organizing Committee were the Officiating VIPs.

Awardees from past events and potential Tokyo 2020 Olympians from the Hong Kong Team, Leo AU Chun Ming (Squash), CHIU Hin Chun (Rowing), LEUNG Po Sum (Judo) and WU Siu Hong (Bowling), were also present at the event to share their views on the Awards.

The Officiating VIPs, together with the athletes, unveiled key dates of the Awards, as follows:-

As the Tokyo Olympic Games would be held in 2020, President FOK introduced the slogan for this year’s Awards in the Press Conference – “Road to Tokyo – Go Hong Kong Team!” Mr. FOK said: “Besides promoting the Games, this logo signified our support to the Hong Kong athletes on their quest for Olympics qualification.”

Mr. Edward BELL, General Manager, Brand, Insights & Marketing Communications of Cathay Pacific said: “The Hong Kong Sport Stars Awards celebrate excellence, progressiveness and an unyielding can-do spirit – values that Cathay Pacific shares and embraces as cornerstones of our new brand platform ‘Move Beyond’. Our Hong Kong athletes exemplify these ideals, never ceasing to push the boundaries as they strive for success.”

To raise local awareness and active participation in the Awards, the Federation, as in previous years, has encouraged members of the public to cast their votes in the public voting conducted via a dedicated website. Details of the public voting would be announced at the Public Voting Announcement Press Conference to be held in Mid-January 2020. Sports reporters from local media organizations would also be invited to vote for their favourite athletes.

The results of the Awards would be announced at the Awards Presentation Ceremony cum Annual Dinner of the Federation on Tuesday, 24 March 2020 at the Grand Hall of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
